ADHD: A Complete Guide to Diagnosis and Management

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that typically begins before the age of 12. There are three main types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Type

  • Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type

  • Combined Presentation

Individuals with the Predominantly Inattentive type often struggle with memory, focus, and sustaining attention. They may daydream during work or school, appear not to listen when spoken to, become easily distracted, and have difficulty starting or finishing tasks.

Those with the Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive type may seem restless, frequently interrupt others, struggle to wait their turn, and often appear to be “on the go.” Sitting still or relaxing can be particularly challenging for them.

The Combined Presentation includes symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity and is the most commonly diagnosed form of ADHD.

Diagnosing ADHD

A diagnosis of ADHD requires a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed professional. This process typically involves collecting a detailed history of the individual’s development, academic performance, and behavioral patterns. Evaluations may also include standardized assessments designed to measure attention, impulsivity, and other aspects of executive functioning.

Treatment and Management

Once a diagnosis is made, it’s important to explore appropriate treatment options. Fortunately, a variety of interventions can help individuals develop skills and strategies to manage the challenges associated with ADHD.

Therapy can be especially beneficial in teaching coping mechanisms, improving time management and organizational skills, and increasing self-awareness. For children, behavioral interventions—such as parent training programs—can improve discipline strategies and strengthen the parent-child relationship.

In some cases, medication may also be recommended. If this is being considered, consultation with a pediatrician or psychiatrist can help determine the most effective treatment plan.
