Holiday Stress Management
The holiday season is upon us. This is a time of year with many festivities and celebrations. While these activities bring joy and excitement, they can also usher in a whirlwind of stress and chaos. Multiple gatherings with family and friends, special school events, year-end parties, maintaining holiday traditions and gift shopping can leave most people feeling overwhelmed. However, with a few thoughtful strategies, families can navigate the season with ease by focusing on what truly matters.
Set Realistic Expectations – while there are many exciting events and things to do during the holiday season, we don’t need to do everything. Sometimes, it’s necessary to limit commitments and to say no in favor of saying yes to a few meaningful things.
Plan Ahead – once the expectations are set, the whole family can devise a plan of action by setting up a family calendar. This creates a visual reminder of commitments and allows everyone to manage their time and expectations wisely.
Maintain Routines – familiarity can provide comfort during busy times. Try to keep routines in place for meals and sleeping as much as possible.
Outdoor Activities – regular physical activity can boost mood and reduce stress. Take time to get outside together and play a game, go for a walk, or ride bikes.
Volunteer Together – serving others within the community is a great way to boost gratitude and reduce stress as we experience the positive outcome of giving rather than “getting.”
Simplify – sometimes the most meaningful experiences are the simplest ones such as baking and decorating cookies, watching a classic holiday movie or enjoying a warm drink by the fireplace.
Work together as a family and be mindful of everyone’s needs. With care and attention to what your family truly values, you will ensure an enjoyable, and fun filled holiday season.
